Newcastle display v Chelsea highlights major issue Benitez needs to sort out over summer
With the dust freshly settling on the end of the Premier League season, Newcastle United fans will have been left rather satisfied with their final outing of the season.
Coming up against a Chelsea side making a last ditch attempt to secure a top four spot and Champions League football next season, the Magpies, themselves looking for three points to confirm a top 10 finish in their first season back in the Premier League, started the game the better side and continued their domination for much of the 90 minutes.
The determination and dedication from the Newcastle stars was reminiscent of some of their best performances throughout the season, and it was a display, regardless of what the result could have beem, which was worthy of recognition.
However, it came after four straight defeats in the league, which had threatened to put a dampener on the end of season celebrations, and the performance raised a worrying issue which manager Rafael Benitez has to address come the summer.
Newcastle’s very best displays have come against sides which may be dubbed ‘bigger’ than the Magpies, with impressive performances and results against the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Leicester, and that trend continued against Chelsea on Sunday.

If the Magpies want to replicate, or even improve on the season just gone, then they need to keep that level of display up no matter who they come up against – for they have often left the fans wanting much more when playing sides deemed around their level.
Recent defeats to the likes of Watford, West Brom and Everton, none of which saw the Magpies perform at their best, could have seen Benitez and his men slip down the table.
If the Spaniard can get his side to lift their game to the level they were at against the Blues, then they will be a side for all to fear.
In other Newcastle United news, the club have been handed a massive boost over keeping Rafa Benitez after a massive £16million revelation.
