Newcastle eye significant deal for top-flight enforcer, hailed by CL manager - report
Newcastle are eyeing up a move for Dundee defender Jack Hendry, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that the deal could be “significant” for cash-strapped Dundee, who know that they can raise a great amount of money from offloading Hendry, 22, with him attracting plenty of attention.
Football Insider exclusively revealed last week that Celtic and Rangers are lining up January bids for the in-demand defender, who is now understood to also be on the radars of Southampton and Crystal Palace.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, whose side is competing in their final Champions League game of the season on Tuesday night against Anderlecht, has recently hailed Hendry for his performance against the Hoops in the Scottish Premiership.
“The boy Hendry at the back I thought was excellent,’ said the ex-Liverpool boss, as quoted by the Mail. “He’s quick and strong and is a good size.”
The report states that Hendry shares similar qualities to Manchester City and England centre-back John Stones and is believed to have just 18 months left on his contract at Dens Park, which could further force Dundee into cashing in on him sooner rather than later.

The Glasgow-born enforcer has made 16 appearances in the Scottish top-flight this season for the Dee.
Football Insider Verdict
Hendry has been a regular for Dundee this season and has played a starring role in his side’s last two wins against Rangers and Ross County. However he is not Premier League quality just yet and may not be at the level required for Newcastle. Rafa Benitez needs players who can come straight into his first-team and improve on the current crop. Would Hendry be an upgrade on Jamaal Lascelles, Florian Lejeune or Ciaran Clark? Probably not. Newcastle struggling for funds in the summer and with a takeover looming they are facing an uncertain January. Benitez better hope that some conclusion is reached as soon as possible in that regard.
In other Newcastle United news, Magpies fans have fumed over the possibility of a January swoop for this legendary talent.
