"My sides are splitting" - Newcastle fans react on Twitter after Fulham thrash Huddersfield

By Russell Edge

Newcastle fans rushed on to social media to celebrate Fulham’s victory over fellow promotion hopefuls Huddersfield, with the result putting automatic promotion within touching distance for the Magpies.

Huddersfield were put to sword by a resurgent Fulham side, whose four first-half goals were enough to secure a 4-1 win over the Terriers at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Norwegian international Stefan Johansen grabbed a brace, whilst Scott Malone struck and Tom Cairney converted from the penalty spot.

Chris Lowe had given the home side an early lead after just four minutes, but it was the visitors who looked the more dangerous of the sides as they continued their push for a play-off spot.

The defeat has seen Huddersfield drop to fifth with just three games left to play, with Fulham just a spot and two points behind in the final play-off spot.

The result means that Newcastle can mathematically secure automatic promotion with victory over Preston North End on Monday night, and would also push them a step closer to title favourites Brighton, who lost to Norwich on Friday night.

Fans of the Magpies rushed to social media to send their congratulations and thanks to Fulham.
