'Rubbish', 'Very poor' - Newcastle fans slam first-teamer for display in friendly
Newcastle United fans have slammed striker Dwight Gayle for his performance in the 1-1 draw with Royal Antwerp in a friendly match on Sunday.
The Magpies played three 45-minute periods against the Belgian club but failed to walk away with a victory as Gayle, 27, missed a last-gasp penalty.
Matt Ritchie put the Premier League club ahead in the first period of play but Alexander Corryn was able to equalise for Antwerp in the 91st minute.
Gayle had a chance from the spot in the final stages of the friendly, but was denied by the goalkeeper.
The former Crystal Palace forward has not been in the best of form this season and fans were quick to criticise him yet again on Twitter for his performance.
One angry member of the Toon Army claimed that his penalty was “very poor”.

I know it was for a run out to make sure everyone gets some minutes today, but Rafa has to be disappointed with the lads today, they were awful, very poor penalty from Gayle too. Needs to be better lads, very poor performance. #NUFC

Gayle has been ever-present in Rafa Benitez’s first-team this season.
The forward has made 29 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals and supplying four assists in the process.
He was banging them in last season in the Championship when the Magpies won the title on the final day.
However he is yet to replicate that form in the Premier League and many believe that he should have been sent out in January rather than Aleksandar Mitrovic.
In other Newcastle United news, the Magpies must swoop for this Premier League centre-forward in the summer after reports of a mass exodus.
