Newcastle United fans have been left begging for Mike Ashley to give manager Rafael Benitez what he wants after the Spaniard made a straightforward but stunning statement over his future.
The former Liverpool boss will have another year on his contract at the end of the season, having penned a three year deal back in 2016, and the uncertainty over his long-term plans at Newcastle have left fans nervous.
It has been claimed previously that Benitez would be unwilling to commit to anything until the club’s Premier League safety was assured, but with Southampton’s 0-0 draw with Leicester City leaving the Magpies needing a solitary point from their final games to mathematically secure their place in the top flight, he has finally broken his silence.
Speaking to the media on Friday, the Spanish boss stunningly threw down the gauntlet to owner Mike Ashley by revealing his demands, stating: “I want talks as soon as possible but I also want to concentrate on beating Everton on Monday.
“They know my idea and we need to match ideas to compete. My idea (ambition) is to be finishing in the top 8 and be competing for trophies and qualifying for Europe.
“My idea now is to sit down with the club and see if the club has these same ambitions.”
His comments has resulted in the Newcastle faithful begging with the Sports Direct supremo, who has been in charge for the last decade, on Twitter, asking for him to either give Benitez what he wants to succeed, or to leave the club and allow a new owner to fund his ambitions.
Here, Football Insider has rounded up a selection of the supporters’ best tweets:
This is a scary quote. If we don't match his ambitions he's gonna walk and who can blame him. Do the right thing and give him backing.

Let's hope to god they do, or rather he does. Come on Mike do the right thing for once in your 10/11 year reign. Back Rafa before we lose him.

I do not think Mike Ashley has any footballing ambition. The only hope is that a new owner with the ambition the same as Rafa comes in,if Ashley stays it will be the same pennypinching blueprint.

The problem is Ashley will see his approach as being vindicated. Hardly any investment and we may finish 10th. He will think he's right. He won't see that Rafa holds it all together. Time to go Mike, #ashleyout
