Newcastle fans: Fabian Schar is ‘finished’ after what they saw v Brighton

Newcastle United fans are insisting Fabian Schar is “finished” at the top level after his performance in the FA Cup clash v Brighton.

Eddie Howe’s side were knocked out of the FA Cup at St James’ Park after Alexander Isak’s spot kick put them 1-0 up during the first half, before a goal from the returning Yankuba Minteh sent both sides into half-time at 1-1.

The second half saw Anthony Gordon sent off after a push to the head of Jan Paul van Hecke, before Tariq Lamptey was also sent off for two yellow-card offences late in the game.

Schar then thought he had won it with minutes to go, before his strike was ruled out following a VAR check, and Danny Welbeck won it for the visitors in extra time.

However, the attention of the home crowd was fixed on the performance of the centre-back after the 33-year-old was caught out by Minteh for Brighton’s first goal.

A lack of pace and poor decision-making placed him firmly at fault for the goal despite a significant deflection off Kieran Tripper which took the ball beyond Martin Dubravka.

As a result, many have begun questioning his long-term future at St James’ Park and calling for the club to sign a new centre-back in the summer.

This comes after former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider that Newcastle plan to “unlock” a transfer war-chest after talks with their PIF owners.

Newcastle to make Fabian Schar contract decision after latest reveal

Schar has been subject to plenty of speculation about his long-term future at St James’ Park, as his current contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

Football Insider revealed on 10 February that Newcastle are set to hold contract talks with Schar in the coming weeks as he is still regarded as a key player in Howe’s side.

Preliminary talks have already taken place but the Magpies plan to accelerate negotiations in the coming weeks with the hope of reaching a full agreement.

Meanwhile, Football Insider also revealed last month that Howe wants to sign a new centre-back after missing out during the January transfer window.

Fabian Schar slammed by supporters at St James’ Park

Schar’s age and declining physical abilities have led to suggestions that his long-term future may now lie away from St James’ Park amid ongoing speculation.

This is not the first time fans have been critical of the former Switzerland international this season, as they insisted Schar should have been sold during the January transfer window.

Taking to social media following the Brighton clash, the supporters have once again aired their frustrations as the centre-back was labelled “finished” and “useless”.
