Newcastle fans rage at 29-year-old for stinker in stalemate against Birmingham
By Danny Wright
Newcastle fans on Twitter were less than pleased with the performance of Mohamed Diame in the 0-0 draw with Birmingham on Saturday.
The 29-year-old played their entire 90 minutes and was moved from the central midfield role into the number 10 slot as Ayoze Perez made way for Jonjo Shelvey in a position where he was less than than convincing.
Diame could barely put a foot right in the stalemate and showed a complete lack of ability to control the ball throughout as the Magpies lacked any kind of lethality in attack.
His game was summed up in the first half when he had a chance to hit a volley at goal, however such is the lack of quality in his control, Diame swung his leg at thin air as he looked to score a screamer.
Birmingham have been in poor form since Gianfranco Zola took charge of the club and the supporters were disappointed to not build a three-point lead at the top of the Championship table.
Ex-Hull midfielder Diame has made 29 league appearances in his debut season for the north East club after he arrived from the Tigers in August 2016 as Benitez rebuilt his squad to launch an assault on an instant return to the Premier League.
Diame scored against Hull in the EFL Cup quarter final defeat and has a total of six goals in all competitions during the current campaign.
Here is a selection of messages on Twitter from the Toon Army about Diame’s stinker in the West Midlands:
Sounded like Perez was making the difference and taken off to move Diame into no10 who is abysmal in that role, wrong decisions again #NUFC

Colback gets the most criticism but Diame has been shockingly bad all season. We need to get rid in the summer. #NUFC
