Leeds beat automatic hopefuls Brighton 2-0 on Saturday evening at Elland Road – and Newcastle fans on Twitter were pleased with the result.
Prior to the game in Yorkshire, Rafa Benitez’ side had missed the opportunity to open up a lead on the second-placed Seagulls after they recorded a draw at Birmingham earlier on in the afternoon.
As a result, if Chris Hughton and his team could pick up three points against the Whites then they would have gone top of the table.
But, striker Chris Wood scored two goals in the second half to ensure Brighton remain in second, one point behind the current leaders with eight games of the season remaining.
One Magpies supporter stated there would be huge scenes if Leeds ended up finishing second while Brighton and Huddersfield faltered.
The Terriers were thrashed at relegation strugglers Bristol City on Friday night with Lee Johnson’s side recording a 4-0 win.
Many Toon Army fans were thanking the Elland Road faithful for doing them a favour against their promotion rivals.
After the international break, Benitez will welcome Wigan to St James’ Park on April 1, with Leeds playing play-off rivals Reading on the same day.
Overall, Newcastle supporters were pleased to see Brighton drop valuable points away from home against play-off contenders Leeds.
Here is a selection of their message on Twitter:
