'Garbage', 'Shocking' - Newcastle fans annihilate key player for display against Chelsea

Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter to annihilate Matt Ritchie for his performance in the 3-1 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Ritchie, 28, has been a mainstay of Rafa Benitez’s side this season but many fans feel as though he is not up to the standard of Premier League football after a dismal showing in London.

Newcastle marched into an early lead after Dwight Gayle made the most of a defensive mix-up but the hosts soon bounced back with goals from Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata.

In the second-half, Ritchie gave away a penalty by hauling down Victor Moses in the box, allowing Hazard to net his second.

It seemed that Scotland international Ritchie was being deployed as a left wing-back by Benitez, but many don’t believe that he has the defensive abilities to fulfill such a role, especially when trying to stop a cross – a weakness that was exposed by West Brom on Tuesday too.

Although it wasn’t the best performance all around by Newcastle against the Premier League champions, fans still highlighted Ritchie as underperforming more than anyone else, with one supporter saying that the key player was “garbage”.

Here is a selection of their tweets:

Ritchie has made 16 appearances across all competitions this season, starting every single Premier League fixture.

He has supplied six assists in the process so definitely has a major impact in the Magpies attack.
