Newcastle fans react on Twitter to Gallagher dismissal v Preston

By Matt Farr

Preston attacker Paul Gallagher was shown a straight red card in bizarre fashion during the 4-1 defeat to Newcastle on Monday – and fans on Twitter found the funny side.

The 32-year-old showcased his goalkeeping skills by throwing himself across the goal-line to deny Newcastle a clear goalscoring opportunity, and was sent-off for his deliberate handball by referee Andy Madley.

However, Newcastle fans on Twitter reacted in humorous fashion on Twitter, commending the Preston attacker for his superb reflex save.

Newcastle fans would not likely have reacted in such fashion had they gone on to lose the game, but the result instead sealed promotion back to the Premier League for Rafa Benitez’s side.

The pressure had been cranked up on Newcastle to cement the remaining automatic promotion spot following the shock 3-1 defeat to Ipswich last time out, with Brighton having already booked their place in the top flight.

But Newcastle gave a performance of the highest quality on their return to St. James’ Park on Monday night, running out comfortable 4-1 winners against Preston.

Goals from Ayoze Perez (two), Christian Atsu and Matt Ritchie saw the home side cruise to victory, with Jordan Hugill netting in reply for the visitors.

In other Newcastle news, Rafa Benitez has revealed why he opted to hand Rob Elliot his first start of the season against Preston.
