Newcastle fans react on Twitter to Shearer award

By Emma Sanders

Newcastle fans reacted in celebration as club legend Alan Shearer was awarded a CBE from the Queen for his work to help a number of charities.

The Match of the Day pundit admitted he was very “honoured” to receive the award on Tuesday afternoon and Newcastle fans were eager to pay their respects.

Shearer has been part of a number of charity organisations, including the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation which aims to find new ways to treat and detect cancer.

The 46-year-old also set-up his own foundation which is a charity aimed at providing aid to a number of disabled communities in the North East, near to where Shearer grew up.

The former England international is one of the greatest ever Newcastle played and he went on to make 63 appearances for his country and scored 30 goals.

He was the Premier League’s top goal-scorer in 1995, 1996 and 1997 and became Newcastle’s all time leading goal-scorer in 2006 when he surpassed Jackie Milburn, ending his career with a tally of 206.

Shearer made 441 appearances for Newcastle before the former skipper took over as manager for a brief spell in April 2009 shortly before the club suffered relegation to the Championship.

He currently works as a sports pundit but continues to work closely alongside leading UK charities such as NSPCC and Sport Relief.
