Newcastle are keen on signing Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney this month – and fans on Twitter were largely optimistic.

The Newcastle Chronicle claim that Rafa Benitez has made approach to enquire as to his availability, and is waiting to hear back from Fulham.

The Magpies boss has already declared his intention to land a new midfielder this month, and is expected to so in the coming weeks.

Jonjo Shelvey faces one more game on the sidelines as part of his five-match suspension, while outcast Cheick Tiote is in talks with a potential move to Sporting Gijon.

After the Daily Mail reported Benitez was looking into potential loan moves for Premier League trio Tom Cleverley, Fabian Delph and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, the former Real Madrid boss appears to have set his sights on a target a bit closer to home.

The Chronicle believes Fulham would be wanting at least £10million from their Championship rivals if they want to sign Cairney, but it remains to be seen if Benitez values the player so highly.

After hearing of Newcastle’s reported interest in Cairney, Magpies fans took to social media to voice their opinions.

Here are some of their messages on Twitter:

It is clear most fans would welcome the signing of Cairney this month, but some are wary that Newcastle may not be willing to meet Fulham’s valuation of the player.

The 25-year-old has been in impressive form for Fulham this term, contributing five goals and four assists from 25 appearances in all competitions.

In other Newcastle transfer news, the Magpies are also plotting a move for this left-back.
