Newcastle fans share instant reactions as Liverpool agree Hugo Ekitike deal

Newcastle fans took frustrations out on the owners and the club’s transfer strategy following a fresh twist in the pursuit of top target Hugo Ekitike.

Newcastle have been in the market for a new striker this summer following Callum Wilson’s departure at the end of his contract.

While names like Dominic Calvert-Lewin had been linked, Newcastle turned their attention to an ambitious move for Ekitike, with a deal that would have broken the club’s transfer record.

Initial plans suggested Ekitike could have partnered Alexander Isak up front, though speculation soon emerged around the Swedish striker’s own future, sparking uncertainty.

Football Insider revealed that Liverpool were preparing a Premier League record bid for Isak, but Newcastle have kept their stance clear in that he is not for sale.

That saw Liverpool shift focus and revive their long-term interest in Ekitike instead, in a move that now appears to have ended Newcastle’s hopes of landing the striker.

Hugo Ekitike agrees Liverpool move as personal terms settled

According to Fabrizio Romano, Ekitike has already said “yes” to join Liverpool, with personal terms said to be “no issue” as the forward is keen on the move.

Romano also reported that Liverpool have now submitted an official bid to Eintracht Frankfurt, with talks set to continue between the two clubs as they work towards an agreement.

Newcastle have long been admirers of Ekitike, having attempted to sign the striker back in January 2022 and again in 2023 during his time at Paris Saint-Germain.

Since making the switch to Germany, the 23-year-old has enjoyed a standout season, scoring 22 goals and registering 12 assists in all competition.

Liverpool also appear set to beat Manchester United for Ekitike’s signature, with Ruben Amorim’s side also expressing interest earlier in the window.

Newcastle dealt fresh blow in striker search as Liverpool close in on Ekitike

Despite Newcastle sealing a deal for Anthony Elanga, their hunt for a top striker continues to hit stumbling blocks.

The Magpies have now missed out on several key targets this summer as both Liam Delap and Joao Pedro opted for Chelsea over a move to St James’ Park. The news of Ekitike agreeing terms with Liverpool has further thinned Eddie Howe’s shortlist.

Frustration among supporters is beginning to mount, with many venting their anger on social media. One fan wrote: “That’s so embarrassing for the club, missing out on another target” while another added: “This is turning out to be an awful window for the fourth time in a row. The owners either no longer care or are flat-out clueless.”
