'Get off the pitch', 'A shambles' - Newcastle fans rip into attacker after first half v Brighton

By Russell Edge

Newcastle United fans have torn into Spanish attacker Ayoze Perez on social media after he failed to impress during the first half of their clash against Brighton on Sunday.

The versatile forward, who can operate as an attacking midfielder or further up the pitch as a central striker, was wasteful in possession and struggled to fashion any clear cut changes for his team mates.

He also failed to threaten Brighton goalkeeper Mathew Ryan, with one attempt drifting horribly wide and out for a throw in.

As a result, fans turned to Twitter to lash out at the 24-year-old, with many suggesting that boss Rafael Benitez needed to make changes to his side.

Since joining from Spanish side Tenerife in the summer of 2014, Perez has gone on to make 122 appearances across all competitions for Newcastle, scoring 25 goals and chipping in with a further 10 assists, and is contracted at St James’ Park until 2021.

Last season saw him appear in 41 of the Magpies’ games, 36 of those coming in the Championship, while this campaign has seen him feature in all five of the club’s Premier League matches.
