Newcastle fans wowed by Sky journalist’s transfer news on ‘striker who’s better than Delap’

Newcastle fans reacted positively on social media in response to a fresh transfer update as the club stepped up their search for a new striker after missing out on Liam Delap.

The Magpies are expected to be active in multiple areas this summer, and bolstering their attacking options is a clear priority.

With Newcastle supporters calling for the club to let Callum Wilson leave upon the expiry of his contract, their depth up front is looking increasingly thin.

Alexander Isak enjoyed a brilliant season, scoring 27 goals in all competitions, but recurring injury concerns have raised questions over squad depth. Meanwhile, William Osula has struggled for minutes and failed to make a consistent impact.

Newcastle had shown serious interest in Delap and were in the race for his signature, but the young forward ultimately chose to join Chelsea, reuniting with former Man City academy coach Enzo Maresca at Stamford Bridge.

Despite the setback, the club appear to have responded quickly, with fans welcoming news that an alternative target has already been identified.

Newcastle plot move for Joao Pedro as striker search continues

According to Sky Sports News senior reporter Rob Dorsett, Newcastle remain keen on signing Brighton forward Joao Pedro.

Posting on X, Dorsett revealed that “[Eddie] Howe wants another striker” and confirmed Pedro is being considered as “an option.”

The Brazilian forward has been linked with the Magpies for some time and came close to joining the club back in 2022 and it now appears Newcastle have continued to track his progress.

Mick Brown, former Manchester United chief scout, told Football Insider that Pedro is open to leaving Brighton this summer, with clubs such as Chelsea also entering the race for his signature.

Pedro enjoyed a strong season at Brighton, earning a nomination for the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season after netting 10 goals and providing seven assists across all competitions, but now eyes a move away in search for European football.

Newcastle fans back Joao Pedro as Callum Wilson exit looms

With Wilson expected to leave the club and the Magpies missing out on Delap, strengthening up front has become a clear priority.

Reports earlier this season suggested Brighton were open to selling Pedro, hoping to attract suitors and potentially spark a bidding war. With Chelsea seemingly opting for Delap, Newcastle may now have a clearer path to secure Pedro’s services.

Supporters have rallied behind the potential move, with one fan saying: “I rate him much higher than Delap” while another added: “£60 million makes complete sense to me.”
