Newcastle: Geordies won’t be happy with David Hopkinson ‘bluster’ ahead of busy summer

Newcastle United are set for a vitally important summer transfer window, according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness.

Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, dropped his verdict on what Newcastle’s summer could look like after they reportedly breached UEFA’s spending rules.

Newcastle’s latest financial accounts showed that the club had sold St James’ Park for £162million to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

However, the Magpies could face action from UEFA as they exclude intra-group sales from its numbers.

It has cast further speculation about whether Newcastle will have to sell players this summer, with the futures of multiple stars already in doubt on Tyneside.

Newcastle braced for the departures of ‘key players’

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – thinks Newcastle do have the resources to rebuild their squad this summer.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness believes the club have a “big” transfer window ahead of them.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Given how bad last summer’s transfer window was, this one is probably even more crucial than ever for Newcastle right now.

“We’ve all heard from David Hopkinson, the CEO, and I think I’ve been right to call him out on his bluster and about the way he’s framing the future for Newcastle, which I don’t think the average Geordie fan will take to very well.

“This summer window is crucial. They’re going to have a chance to do it [rebuild the squad]. They’ll get some resources, but there’s going to have to be a big refiguring of the squad. Some key players are going to be going, and it depends on who they bring in.”

Eddie Howe could face exodus of stars at Newcastle

Even in their financial position and without European football next season, Newcastle are desperate to keep their key players at the club.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle are reluctant to let Lewis Hall depart this summer.

The Magpies are likely to put a high price tag on stars to fend off interest from rival clubs, though midfielder Sandro Tonali and defender Tino Livramento look likely to leave.

Anthony Gordon and Nick Woltemade are other big players in Howe’s squad linked with moves away, whilst offers could arrive for the likes of Malick Thiaw and Bruno Guimaraes.
