Newcastle handed big Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes boost by pundit

Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes could remain at Newcastle for another year as they are happy at the club and in the city.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Frank McAvennie claimed both Isak, 24, and Guimaraes, 26, could commit one more year to the Newcastle project and then assess their futures at the club.

McAvennie insisted that, as things stand, neither player would start for a team like Man City, so there would be no point leaving just to sit on the bench.

West Ham loanee Kalvin Phillips was used as the example of a player who took the step up too early before failing to adapt to the increased pressure.

This comes after Football Insider reported that Newcastle will hold crunch talks with Isak to negotiate a new contract despite interest from Arsenal.

Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes to commit to Newcastle

Both Isak and Guimaraes have been heavily linked with moves away from St James’ Park this summer, but the Magpies want to keep their star players at the club.

McAvennie insisted that both players should wait for a year and reassess their options, with the possibility of helping the club progress into a position where they would not need to leave.

They’ve got to keep their stars,” he told Football Insider.

If they can keep the two boys, the midfield player Guimaraes and Isak up front, they’ve shown that they can do it.

Speaking to a few people there, they seem to quite like the place. That might tempt them to give it another year.

They’re still growing as players. Neither of the two of them would walk into Man City’s team at the moment, they wouldn’t.

They might buy them, but why would you want to go if you can’t get a game like Phillips?

They might stay for another year and go next year. Give Newcastle another year and then, if they’re getting closer, they might want to stay.

That’s the team they’re going to be in the next five years.”
