Newcastle United look set to face a Huddersfield side including star man Aaron Mooy as well as Philip Billing on Saturday after they were confirmed as having recovered from their injury layoffs.

The Australian midfielder was a massive doubt for the Terriers’ visit to St James’ Park after picking up a knock while on international duty with his country, having been the match winner in the reverse fixture, netting the only goal in a 1-0 victory for David Wagner and his men.

Billing meanwhile has missed the last two games for Huddersfield in what has been an injury plagued season for the 21-year-old midfielder, ankle surgery ruling him out for much of the campaign.

However the pair are back in line to feature during the Magpies after Wagner delivered a crucial training ground update.

He was quoted on the Chronicle’s live blog (29/09, 13:15) as saying: “Both Aaron Mooy and Philip Billing should be fit.

“They are both with the fitness coaches today and should be back in the squad and in contention for Saturday.”

Mooy has 29 Premier League appearances under his belt, missing just one of the club’s top flight matches this season, while Billing has featured 11 times in the league.

Football Insider verdict

Newcastle will know all about Mooy after he ran the show back at the start of the season, and it looks that the Magpies’ stars, rather than injury, will have to nullify his effect come Saturday. He can pull strings from the centre if allowed the space and time, in a similar manner to Jonjo Shelvey, so it will be a battle to see which midfield maestro comes out on top. The clash looks to be a crunch one for Premier League survival and both managers will be wanting to come away with three points, but there is every chance the pressure could turn it into a nervy tie. The winner will certainly be less nervous come full time, while the loser will be facing being dragged deeper into the mire.
