Newcastle in two-way battle with PL rivals for Arsenal fringe player - report
By Russell Edge
Newcastle are set to battle Championship rivals Brighton for Arsenal and England full-back Kieran Gibbs, according to a report.
The print edition of the Sunday Sun claims that the Magpies are ready to go head-to-head with fellow promoted side Brighton to try and seal the signature of the 27-year-old.
The left-sided defender has endured a difficult season at the north London side and has found himself limited to just 10 Premier League appearances.
This has been down to the impressive form of fellow left-back Nacho Monreal, who has established himself as Arsene Wenger’s number one choice in the starting XI.
Gibbs has a contract keeping him at the club until 2018, meaning the Magpies or the Seagulls could try tempt Arsenal into selling before it expires next summer.

Football Insider verdict:
Rafael Benitez has made it very clear that Premier League experience is at the top of his list, and he could do a lot worse than signing Arsenal’s Gibbs. The 27-year-old has 143 top flight appearances to his name while he has also picked up 10 caps for England. The Magpies will be looking for reinforcements in defence this summer, and Gibbs would be a worthy challenger to current first choice left-back Paul Dummett. His pace down the flank would also be a welcome addition to a Newcastle side who have struggled to form decent partnerships between full-backs and wingers. Plus, it looks likely Gibbs will be available on a cut-price deal, which will suit Benitez, and Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, down to the ground.
