Newcastle: Kieran Trippier contract ‘U-turn’ as Tino Livramento exit fears emerge

Newcastle United could accelerate plans to hand Kieran Trippier a new contract amid growing fears they could lose Tino Livramento to Man City.

Livramento, 23, is the first-choice right-back for Eddie Howe and will start when fit and available, although ongoing injury issues have derailed his season.

Trippier has featured heavily in his absence, but will have doubts about signing a new to play second-fiddle to his teammate and could opt against extending.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Livramento’s potential departure will be make or break for the 35-year-old’s future.

Man City have been long-term admirers of the England international and could step up their efforts in what looks like being another busy transfer window for Newcastle.

Man City’s Tino Livramento move to impact Kieran Trippier

Football Insider revealed last month that Man City will make a move for Livramento this summer as they finally look to address their full-back issues.

That will open to door for Trippier to extend his stay at St James’ Park, with his undoubted quality making him a valuable player despite his age.

Previously, he has been expected to leave Newcastle on a free transfer this summer.

“Trippier’s future is still up in the air,” Brown told Football Insider.

“Had Tino Livramento not had his injury issues this season, he might not have played anywhere near the number of games he has played.

“So he might be looking at what his role is going to be in the team long-term, and if he’s not going to be involved as regularly, he could go and play somewhere else.

“He doesn’t want to be a number two at his age, but that could all change if Livramento was to leave.

“We’ve spoken before about Man City looking at him, he’s somebody they’d like to bring in and they might look to get it done this summer.

“So that would then mean Trippier would be part of that starting XI again, because he’s still good enough to play a role in the side.

“A lot will depend on what happens with Livramento. If he’s going to be leaving Newcastle, Trippier could stay. If he’s going to stay, then it could be Trippier who goes.”

Newcastle’s updated stance on Trippier contract talks

Trippier has been one of Howe’s key men amid Newcastle’s desire to compete with the world’s biggest clubs over the last few years.

Football Insider revealed on 14 March that Howe wants Trippier to extend his Newcastle contract and still sees him as a valuable member of their squad.

Questions have been raised about his long-term future due to Livramento’s emergence and doubts about whether he would be happy as the second choice.

He is expected to have plenty of admirers if he does leave Newcastle, with Premier League and European clubs keeping tabs on his situation.

The club remain hopeful of keeping him around, but the former England international is still keen to play regular football at this stage of his career, and uncertainty has lingered.
