Newcastle make new approaches for £28m centre-forward (not Jorgensen) - report

Newcastle United have approached Leicester with new enquiries about centre-forward Islam Slimani, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claimed in their live transfer blog on Wednesday [10:13am] that the Foxes are looking to net £20million for Slimani, 29, as the Magpies continue their hunt for a new striker.
Slimani was signed by Leicester in 2016 for a staggering £28million from Sporting CP, but since then, the Algeria international has struggled to hold down a regular first-team spot and has scored just eight goals in 35 Premier League appearances.
This season, the target man has made just 17 appearances in all competitions but has started just twice in the league.
He has five goals to his name but although his stats are not the best, it seems Newcastle are persistent in trying to snap up the King Power forward.
The Daily Mail adds that West Brom and Brighton are interested in Aleksandar Mitrovic, and the funds from the Serb’s sale would go towards mounting a pursuit for Slimani.
The Algerian is not the only striker said to be on Newcastle’s radar at the minute as Chronicle reporter Lee Ryder claimed on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday night that Magpies owner Mike Ashley has sanctioned a swoop for Feyenoord’s Nicolai Jorgensen.
Football Insider verdict
Slimani’s goal record at Leicester is not great but he has not had much chance to get into the first-team with Jamie Vardy and Shinji Okazaki being at the club and being in better form. Kelechi Iheanacho is also on the books at the King Power so Claude Puel perhaps has too many strikers to deal with at the moment. Out of the four, Slimani has a lot of quality but the loyalty shown towards Vardy and Okazaki means he’s down the pecking order. Newcastle will do well to get him though and it seems they would have to smash their transfer record to get him. Losing fan favourite Mitrovic will be a blow to the Toon Army, but Slimani is an improvement.
In other Newcastle United news, Ashley has also sanctioned the Magpies to swoop for this £7million left-back from a top six club.
