Newcastle make move for £28m centre-forward after missing out on Sturridge - Sky Sports

Newcastle United made a move to sign Leicester forward Islam Slimani on Monday night, according to a report.
Sky Sports claimed in their live transfer blog on Tuesday [12:41pm] that the Magpies tried to sign Slimani, 29, after they missed out on Daniel Sturridge, who has now completed a loan move to West Brom.
It is understood that Leicester will allow Slimani to leave the King Power on loan before the 11pm transfer deadline on Wednesday night, but only to a foreign club.
Ligue 1 champions Monaco are said to be interested in the Algeria international.
Slimani moved to Leicester from Sporting CP for £28million in 2016 to become their most expensive signing.
However the centre-forward has found it difficult to hold down a regular spot in the starting line-up and this season he has started just two matches in the Premier League.
In total, the Algerian has made 46 appearances since moving to England, scoring 13 goals.
Football Insider verdict
Slimani would be a good signing for Newcastle but it appears that Rafa Benitez and co are barking up the wrong tree. The forward has not had a fair rub of the green at Leicester so his stats are not that impressive because most of his appearances are off the bench. Newcastle have very limited time to now sign a striker before the deadline on Wednesday so they might not actually bring in anyone at all. Benitez cannot panic buy though. Signing a player who is not good enough to improve on what he already has could be a huge disaster. It’s really hard to see how the Magpies could stay up if they do not get anyone in.
In other Newcastle United news, the Magpies have made a stunning offer for this £120,000-a-week West Ham player.
