Newcastle’s north east rivals Middlesbrough have been turned down in a late move for reported Toon target Andros Townsend, according to a reliable journalist.
The Magpies have been linked to the 25-year-old throughout January and Sky Sports’ north-east correspondent Keith Downie took to Twitter on Monday afternoon to report that Newcastle and Palace were just £2million apart in their valuations.
But, David Coverdale, a north east reporter for the Sun shared on his personal Twitter account on deadline-day that Aitor Karanka’s side were rejected in a late bid to hijack any deal between Newcastle and Palace.

Townsend departed from Newcastle in the summer after Palace triggered his £13million release clause following their relegation.
But, his time in south east London has not gone as planned and in 25 encounters he has contributed just one goal and three assists.
He had much more joy at the Magpies and under Rafa Benitez, where he scored four goals and provided two himself in 13 appearances after leaving Tottenham for £12million last January.
The famous north east side are sat in second place in the second tier, but they have not brought any players in during the January window yet.
It would seem that the chase for Townsend will go right up to the final stages with Palace set to face Bournemouth on Tuesday evening.
Football Insider verdict:
Palace’s reluctance to deal with Middlesbrough could be a sign that they have already agreed a deal with Newcastle which hasn’t been picked up yet, or that they are simply not going to deal with a fellow relegation rival. Fans will certainly be hoping that it’s the former with many keen to see the return of Townsend on the St James’ Park pitch after his success in the last campaign. The former England international’s pace can cause many problems to teams in the Premier League, let alone the Championship while his ability to cut in and deliver a thunderous strike can help the north east giants make an instant return to the top flight.
