Newcastle next manager: Unai Emery’s odds of replacing Eddie Howe revealed
Newcastle United could yet sack Eddie Howe and replace him with Aston Villa boss Unai Emery in the coming weeks.
The Magpies’ chief is under pressure amid a frustrating season at St James’ Park, as his side look set to miss out on the prospect of European football for next season.
They also saw their 2025-26 continental adventure end in embarrassing fashion in March, as they were dismantled 7-2 by Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League Last 16 tie.
Defeat to Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby has also helped to heap the pressure on Howe since then, as supporters have been growing increasingly frustrated with the way the team have performed of late.
Newcastle’s managerial situation is precarious heading into the final weeks of the campaign, as many on Tyneside feel that Howe has taken the team backwards this term.

The Premier League has already seen nine managers lose their jobs so far this season, and Howe could potentially be the man to take that total into double figures before the end of the campaign.
Newcastle finished fifth last season and also secured a major trophy in the form of the Carabao Cup, but that success has been little more than a distant memory this time around.
| Games | W | D | L | Win % | |
| Eddie Howe (Bournemouth, Newcastle) | 362 | 138 | 80 | 144 | 38.12% |
| Unai Emery (Arsenal, Aston Villa) | 183 | 95 | 40 | 48 | 51.91% |
Howe’s men are currently languishing in the bottom half of the table, and have been unable to perform with any consistency since the beginning of the season.
That has seen the boss come under pressure from the fanbase, and the bookmakers have already drawn up their list of potential candidates to replace the 48-year-old.
Emery is currently seen as an outsider to take the reins at St James’, with one of the UK’s leading bookmakers pricing him at odds of 16/1 to make the switch to the North East.

Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola is the current favourite to step into Howe’s shoes, while the likes of Oliver Glasner, Marco Silva and Xavi are also seen as likely candidates.
Door could open for Newcastle to launch Unai Emery swoop
Football Insider revealed at the start of March that a summer exit from Aston Villa is increasingly likely for Emery, due to frustration with the financial restrictions surrounding his work at Villa Park.
The second city outfit have toiled away amid significant PSR concerns in recent years, and that has often meant they have found it difficult to complete the necessary deals to take their squad to the next level.
His long-term future in the West Midlands appears to be in question, which could leave the door open for Newcastle to potentially launch a move for him as a result.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has also suggested that Emery will not be a contender to take the reins at Old Trafford, meaning they are set to be one less club for the Magpies to compete against in order to get him.
Emery’s chances of moving to Newcastle may be viewed as a long shot at the moment, but that could easily change between now and May.
