Newcastle plan Bruno Guimaraes talks after Man City approach

Newcastle United have endured a difficult start to the new season with just two wins from their seven games across all competitions so far.

Eddie Howe‘s side have been frustrated by 0-0 draws against the likes of Aston Villa, Leeds United and Bournemouth so far, but picked up a 4-1 win against Bradford last time out.

A difficult pre-season campaign preceded the tough start to the season, but the Magpies are hopeful of kicking on and turning around their fortunes.

As a result of the Alexander Isak to Liverpool transfer saga adding further turbulence to their pre-season preparations, the Magpies are now determined to avoid a similar situation.

Howe plans to keep his star players at St James’ Park for the foreseeable future, despite constant interest in the likes of Bruno Guimaraes.

Newcastle plan to offer Bruno Guimaraes a new contract

Football Insider revealed on 27 September that Newcastle rebuffed Man City’s approach for Guimaraes in the summer and have no plans to let him go.

Now, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the Magpies are planning to sit down with the midfielder with a new contract on the agenda.

Newcastle have always refused offers for Guimaraes but have so far been unsuccessful in completely deterring the interest, leading to fresh approaches being made.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: ““Newcastle had a lot to focus on in the summer with the Alexander Isak transfer saga, and they don’t want to lose any more of their star players.

“As I said, Guimaraes seems like he’s happy at Newcastle. We know that Newcastle are very happy with him.

“I would imagine there’ll be discussions potentially to be held over a new contract to see if they can keep him on Tyneside as well, but a lot will depend on how Newcastle are doing and performing.

“If they’re competing in the Champions League, I don’t see any reason why Guimaraes would push for a move away.”

The midfielder’s current contract is set to run until 2028, with plenty of time remaining, but the Magpies are keen to reward him for his loyalty and performances.

Man City remain keen to sign Guimaraes from Newcastle

Guimaraes declared himself a Geordie recently after gushing over the love he has received from the Magpies fans since his arrival from Lyon in 2022.

However, Pep Guardiola is known to be a big fan of the midfielder and has attempted to bring him to the Etihad on multiple occasions since his move to St James’ Park.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider in December that Man City view Guimaraes as a top target to strengthen their midfield.

Despite the arrivals of Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki to bolster City’s midfield in the summer, their interest in the Brazil international has lingered.

However, Football Insider revealed in April that Newcastle are well-placed to keep Guimaraes despite the interest ahead of the summer window.
