Newcastle player ratings v Brighton – Anderson dazzles, 3/10 had just 13 touches

Newcastle United suffered a blow in their pursuit of European football after being held to a 1-1 draw against Brighton on Saturday (11 May).

The Magpies went behind when Joel Veltman opened the scoring after 18 minutes before Sean Longstaff levelled things up on the verge of half-time.

Newcastle enjoyed 56 per cent of the possession and had seven shots on target, but they didn’t quite do enough to earn all three points at St James’ Park.

Football Insider has analysed the Newcastle players’ performances out of 10 against Brighton.

PLAYER RATINGS

Martin Dubravka [6]

It wasn’t the busiest afternoon for Martin Dubravka, but he made a fine save to deny Danny Welback from making it 2-0 to Brighton. The goalkeeper made three stops throughout the game and recorded a 92 per cent pass completion rate.

Tino Livramento [5]

Tino Livramento will have better outings in a Newcastle shirt. The right-back was beaten early on to hand Brighton a chance as he struggled defensively at times. He won just three of his seven duels and failed to find a teammate with any of his three crosses.

Emil Krafth [4]

It was a game where Emil Krafth showed why he’s usually on the fringes of the Magpies team. Playing out of position at centre-back, he won just four of his nine duels and committed two fouls. He was also sloppy on the ball at times, having given possession away on 11 occasions.

Dan Burn was the pick of the Newcastle defenders

Dan Burn [7]

Dan Burn had a solid game as the senior man in the defence. He blocked four shots and made one tackle throughout the afternoon, while also recording a 90 per cent pass completion rate.

Newcastle

Lewis Hall [6]

It was a decent performance from Lewis Hall. The left-back did his defensive duties well, winning three out of his five duels, and played some good balls forward to get his side up the pitch. He also made two interceptions.

Newcastle midfielders put a strong showing in against Brighton

Sean Longstaff [7]

It was a typically busy display from Longstaff. He took his goal well and played one key pass for his side. The midfielder would have liked to have been a bit better on the ball after recording just a 77 per cent pass success rate.

Bruno Guimaraes [7]

Bruno Guimaraes looked to get on the ball and make things happen for his side. The Brazilian won nine of his 14 duels and made three key passes as he caused problems for the Brighton midfield. But he was a little sloppy at times, giving the ball away on 21 occasions.

Elliot Anderson [8]

The best player on the pitch. Elliot Anderson was everywhere for Newcastle and played the ball across the box for Longstaff’s goal. The midfielder had two shots in the game, played three passes and won 10 of his 13 duels. He can be pleased with his performance.

Alexander Isak put in poor display for Newcastle

Jacob Murphy [5]

It didn’t really happen for Jacob Murphy, but he worked hard. Although the winger got into some dangerous areas, he only found a teammate with one of his four crosses as he lacked composure in the final third.

Alexander Isak [3]

An incredibly uncharacteristic performance from Newcastle’s star man. After touching the ball just 13 times, Alexander Isak was subbed off in the second half. The Swede won just one of his four duels and missed a big chance for his side. There will be better afternoons ahead for him.

Anthony Gordon [6]

Anthony Gordon posed a threat down the left, but didn’t quite have that killer instinct. The winger made a good run for the Magpies’ goal, opening up space for Anderson to find Longstaff in the box. He completed four of his six dribbles and saw two shots blocked by Brighton defenders.

SUBSTITUTES

Miguel Almiron [5]

After coming on with just over 20 minutes to play, Miguel Almiron recorded a 100 per cent pass completion rate but was booked for simulation.

Harvey Barnes [4]

Harvey Barnes won’t remember this game too fondly after missing two good chances to put Newcastle ahead.

Joelinton [5]

Although Joelinton struggled to have much of an impact on the game after coming off the bench, he did play one key pass.
