Newcastle plot Matheus Nunes deal after Man City twist – sources

Newcastle United are weighing up a late move to sign Matheus Nunes from Man City before the window closes, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that City are willing to let the 26-year-old move on before the 11pm deadline on 30 August.

The return of Ilkay Gundogan has pushed the attacking midfielder down the pecking order under Pep Guardiola, and he could now be allowed to leave.

A new midfielder has not been a priority for the Magpies this summer, but they have been put on alert by the opportunity to land a highly-rated player.

Nunes struggled to make an impact at the Etihad since arriving from Wolves last year and has now found himself on the fringes of the squad.

Atletico Madrid have also expressed an interest in signing the midfielder, while clubs across Europe are also considering moves.

Nunes arrived at Man City from Wolves last summer as the replacement for Gundogan, who left to join Barcelona on a free transfer.

However, just one year later, the German midfielder has made a dramatic return to his former club, leaving his new teammate facing the exit door.

The Portugal international featured 31 times under Guardiola last time out, although 15 of those appearances came from the bench as he failed to make a significant impact.

As a result, City are willing to see him leave after a year at the club, setting clubs across Europe on red alert to the possibility of a cut-price deal.

However, with just hours remaining until the transfer window closes, any deal will have to be arranged quickly.

Having retained the signature of Bruno Guimaraes despite strong interest earlier this summer, and the return of Sandro Tonali, the midfield has not been an area of concern.

However, the club are keen to take advantage of an opportunity to land a top player should a realistic deal become available before 11pm.
