Newcastle haven’t given up on bringing Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend back to the north East on loan, according to a reliable journalist.
The Mail claimed earlier this week that the two clubs were “continuing negotiations” over a deal for Townsend to re-join the Magpies this month, after leaving in January for £13million.
Times reporter George Caulkin has now revealed that Palace have approached the Toon about loaning Chancel Mbemba, and that Newcastle have “AGAIN asked” about bringing in Townsend, also on a loan deal.
Crystal Palace representatives have asked Benitez about signing Mbemba on loan. In turn, Nufc have AGAIN asked about loaning Townsend …

Mbemba has hardly featured for the Toon this season, making just eight appearances in all competitions despite featuring regularly under Benitez last term.
With the likes of Grant Hanley, Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark ahead of him in the pecking order, Newcastle could allow the DR Congo international to leave St. James’ Park.
If Sam Allardyce does bring Mbemba to Selhurst Park, then Palace my look more favourably at allowing England international Townsend to rejoin the Magpies.
Similarly to Mbemba, Townsend has struggled to gain a regular place in the Palace side as he fails to replicate the kind of form that earned him a move to London in the first place.
Scoring just once in 24 league and cup appearances this season, Townsend could join the Magpies’ promotion hunt with four days remaining in the transfer window.
Football Insider verdict:
The Toon must do all they can to bring Townsend to Tyneside this month. A shining light in a side that got relegated last season, the former Spurs ace is loved in the north East and that support could bring the best out of him and provide the stuttering spark in Newcastle’s aim of achieving an instant return to the Premier League. If allowing Mbemba to leave the Toon and join Palace on loan this month will help smooth things over for Townsend to rejoin his old side, then Benitez should sanction a move as quickly as possible to create a St. James’ Park return for the attacker.
