Newcastle United will be forced to sell one or two of their prized assets in the summer if they miss out on Champions League football.

It would take a miracle for the Magpies to qualify from the position they find themselves in, with seven points and six teams in between them from fifth-placed Liverpool.

There remains some hope that Newcastle can qualify for some level of Europe this season, with the Conference League spot likely to drop to eighth.

But even that will not be enough to avert the financial blow that is heading the way of St James’ Park.

Newcastle transfer chiefs will now face a key decision ahead of the summer, with several players attracting interest elsewhere.

Newcastle United to be forced into big sales

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider this week that Newcastle are braced for the exit of key players this summer, as they look to cover for a disappointing season.

Eddie Howe’s side have struggled for consistency throughout the campaign, after dealing with a tumultuous summer.

Alexander Isak eventually got his move away from the Magpies on transfer deadline day last summer, and he was replaced by Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade.

Both players have struggled to replicate the Swede’s impact, however, and Newcastle have been left far too weak going forward.

The end of the season could still bring an end to Howe’s tenure, but ahead of a summer that promises big change, Newcastle may be inclined to stick behind their manager.

BBC Sport reports that it is understood that, if Newcastle miss out on the Champions League, they will need to sell at least one, potentially two, “prized assets” this summer.

Who could Newcastle sell this summer?

Several Newcastle players are expected to be involved in potential exits from the club this summer.

Sandro Tonali’s agent has been outspoken about the possibility that his client could depart in the coming months, and the Italian has generated great interest.

Bruno Guimaraes will also attract attention if he indicates a willingness to leave, while Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento continue to be the subject of speculation.

The latter two are both reportedly of interest to Premier League leaders Arsenal, and they appear among the likeliest to depart.

Newcastle face a defining summer transfer window, with the actions of transfer chiefs set to be crucial for the club’s future progression.
