Newcastle stars in for rude awakening after fan favourite's manager reveal - pundit

Noel Whelan has warned the Newcastle United squad could be in for a rude awakening following Steve Bruce’s departure.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted a new manager might not have the man-management skills of the recently departed boss.

Newcastle star Allan Saint-Maximin posted a heartfelt message to his personal Twitter account following Bruce’s exit.

He hailed the 60-year-old’s “caring” attitude and how he “protected” the players.

In an interview with Sky Sports, the French winger hailed Bruce as a “human” and revealed he was “disappointed” by the turn of events.

Whelan suggested the players enjoyed working under Bruce, regardless of results.

He warned a change of manager could upset the apple cart on Tyneside.

Asked if the players could be in for a rude awakening under a new manager, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah. I think the players enjoyed working with Bruce.

“Even though the results weren’t always great, you can’t expect it when you’ve got very little money to spend. No help from the board, these were really difficult times. He comes across as a really nice guy.

“When a new manager comes in, it sometimes excites the players. They’ll always respect what Bruce has done and I’m sure they’ll leave on good terms.

“We knew that this was coming, this wasn’t something that was out of the blue. We just wanted to know when it was going to happen and how it was going to happen.

“The problems with the squad that the new manager will have are still there. There’s still pressure on the new manager to get results.”
