Newcastle have made an offer for Sporting Lisbon defender Ruben Semedo, according to a reliable journalist.

Sky Sports correspondent Keith Downie has revealed on his personal Twitter account that the Magpies have placed a £10million bid for the 23-year-old.

It is understood that Rafael Benitez’s side are leading the chase for his signature ahead of West Brom and West Ham, but that Portuguese club Sporting are holding out for £13million.

Benitez is looking to strengthen his squad for the Premier League next season and appears intent on adding a new top-class defender.

Semedo is a highly rated centre-back that was an important player for Sporting last season by making 31 appearances across all competitions, including six in the Champions League group stages.

He is a product of the Sporting academy and has only recently made his breakthrough into the first team.

The Portuguese defender has represented his nation at various youth levels, but is still awaiting his first senior chance for the reigning European champions.

Football Insider verdict:

Newcastle do have several centre-back options already in their squad, but may need a reinforcement if Grant Hanley leaves St James’ Park. Benitez does have Jamaal Lasceless, Ciaran Clark and Chancel Mbemba at his disposal, but none of them are proven Premier League performers over a prolong period of time. Semedo is an upcoming talent and the level of his European pedigree means he would be a big coup for Newcastle. They want to sign players that can help them stay in the top flight and powerful defender Semedo looks a ready-made product. However, the only question marks would be whether he could make the seamless transition to the Premier League.

In other Newcastle transfer news, they have made contact for a La Liga defender wth an £8.7million release clause.
