Newcastle are set to make a move for Hull defender Harry Maguire ahead of favourites Tottenham, according to a report.
The Sun claims that the Magpies are looking to leapfrog Spurs to sign the 24-year-old centre-back, who has proven himself as a consistent top-flight defender.
The north London club were were installed as odds-on favourites by Sky Bet to secure Maguire’s signature, with odds of 1/3 offered.
Although the betting company are giving long odds of 33/1 for Newcastle to sign the Hull man, the Sun report Newcastle are “desperate” to take him to St James’ Park.
This season Maguire has made 28 appearances for the Tigers, scoring two goals, as he enters the final year of his contract in the summer.
Football Insider verdict:
Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has already admitted Premier League experience is his priority ahead of next season and with Maguire that is exactly what he will get. However, if he was expecting to secure a cut-price deal because of the player’s contract status, he might want to think again. Newcastle cannot compete with the likes of Tottenham if it comes to a bidding war, so he will be hoping that Spurs’ interest is not too serious. If it does come down to Maguire choosing between the two, Benitez must try convince him that he will be guaranteed a starting berth at St James’ Park, something which may not be so forthcoming were he to head to White Hart Lane.
In other Newcastle news, the club are reported to be ready to break their transfer record for this Premier League midfielder.
