Newcastle tipped to pay ‘£100m’ for ‘big players’ by transfer cut-off – pundit

Newcastle have been tipped for a futher “100million” spree by the 31 January cut-off as they are “nowhere near” safe in the Premier League.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ urgent need for reinforcements.

Newcastle have the second-worst defensive record in the league this season and after a draw against Watford on Saturday (15 January) the club are staring relegation in the face.

The arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood have so far done nothing to improve the Magpies’ woeful form.

As a result, Kenny insists Newcastle must spend big in the second half of the window.

“Newcastle need to put their hands in their pockets,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Wood and Trippier are in but the big players from big clubs who can make a real difference are going to cost so much more.

“Newcastle are nowhere near safe. Even the signings and having the fans back onside has not changed things.

“One win all season, who wants to come and join that? Money will make the difference here and there is no shame in that.

“Newcastle need at least three more players signed and ready by the end of the window, if not more.

“That is going to cost money. Luckily, Newcastle have plenty of that to go around.

“They can go out and spend £100million like it’s nothing and that’s what they need to do. I think they will, as they have to.”

Newcastle will find themselves bottom of the league if Burnley beat Watford on Tuesday (17 January).

The Magpies are next in action against Leeds on Saturday (22 January).
