Newcastle tipped to seal two ‘quality’ January signings after source’s reveal – pundit

Alex McLeish has tipped Newcastle United to sign “one or two” top-quality players during the January transfer window.

The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Magpies do not need to make too many additions to turn things around.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider (11th November) Eddie Howe wants three signings – two centre-backs and a central midfielder – signed in January.

Speaking to NUFC TV (November 11th), new club chief Amanda Staveley confirmed the club are set to do business in the January window.

However, McLeish insisted the north east giants do not need to go wild in the transfer market.

He pointed towards Tottenham’s failure to progress after signing seven players following Gareth Bale’s sale.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “We’ve seen this before, when Spurs made £80million on Gareth Bale.

“They went on a bit of a spending spree, bringing in six or seven players in. They weren’t the same team with those players, without the one diamond who had left.

“I don’t necessarily think they have to bring too many heads in. I think Eddie needs to target the places in the team that he feels could do with that wee lift to take them through this tough end of the season.

“The business end of the season is the run into the European places and relegation. I always say one or two players of great quality can make that difference.”

The permanent signing of Joe Willock was the only senior addition at St James’ Park this summer.

Howe kicks off his spell as Newcastle manager with a home tie against Brentford on Saturday.

In other news, Newcastle United have agreed terms with proven Premier League operator ahead of January.
