‘Newcastle to take advantage of desperate clubs as transfer plan revealed’
Newcastle United could be set for a busy summer transfer window if they can secure a place in next season’s Champions League.
Eddie Howe’s side moved back up into third place in the Premier League table following their 2-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday (11 May).
Newcastle have been restricted in their spending this season after facing profit and sustainability (PSR) issues, with top-flight clubs only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.
The north-east giants were forced to sell Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest before last year’s accounting deadline to avoid a spending breach.
Speaking to the media on 2 May, Howe revealed Newcastle will try to take advantage of other clubs’ financial distress if they can this summer.
Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider they will likely be targeting clubs that are close to breaching the spending rules.
Newcastle failed to make a single signing in the latest January transfer window.

Newcastle could land ‘£9m’ windfall
Borson revealed Newcastle could end the season £9million up on their budget following their strong campaign.
He told Football Insider: “I think they’re just sorted for PSR for this year.
“They are just not taking any risks. I think they will probably finish higher than they budgeted for.
“If you look at their budget for the season, almost every line of that budget was probably known at the start of the season because there are very few variances to it in terms of what might happen.
“They have got no Champions League and they’ve got no Europa League. The only kind of things that were going to change were how many home games did they have maybe, or how many domestic cup games did they have at home, and what were their commercial sales like from a sort of kit replica perspective.
“They have got a new replica business there with Adidas, so how did that turn out versus expectation?
“Then there’s the league position. That is one where they budgeted for say seventh and they’re probably going to get top five, so they’re probably £6-9million ahead of their budget there.
“Then on top of that, they sold two players in January, probably with a profit of let’s say £20million between Lloyd Kelly and Almiron, maybe a bit more.
“I just think they’re safe from a PSR perspective and therefore are looking at it and going ‘Well, are there clubs around in June who are, like we were last year, desperate and very close to breaches, and we can sort of leverage that negotiating strength against them’.
“That’s what they’ll be thinking.”

Newcastle work on deal to sign Bayern Munich star
Football Insider revealed on 27 April Newcastle are working on a deal to sign Kim-Min Jae from Bayern Munich this summer.
Howe is keen to strengthen his squad ahead of their potential return to the Champions League, with the centre-back high on their list of transfer targets.
