Newcastle told to complete 'easy' Tarkowski signing after Romano update - pundit
Noel Whelan has urged Newcastle to complete an “easy” deal for Burnley defender James Tarkowski.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Magpies could turn their attention to the 29-year-old with a deal for Diego Carlos “dead in the water”.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano (26 January), Newcastle are now exploring other options with Sevilla maintaining that Carlos is “not for sale”.
Football Insider revealed yesterday (25 January) that the Spanish club have slapped a price tag of £50million on the defender, with the Magpies already seeing offers of £30million-plus rejected this month.
The Sun reported on 22 January that the Magpies “lead the chase” for Tarkowski, who is out of contract this summer.
When asked about a potential move for the England international, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “They’ve got less than a week now to really decide where it is they want to go in this window.

“It takes time to get these negotiations ironed out, so it’s going to be pretty tight.
“But if the Diego Carlos deal is now dead in the water because Sevilla are asking for too much, then straight away the attentions have got to turn to someone else.
“A deal for Tarkowski would be that bit easier because he’s already in England.
“He knows the Premier League, he’s fit and ready to go – and he knows the predicament because Burnley are facing the same fate.
“Things won’t change for him, but the biggest factor for me that will draw Newcastle to him is his experience in this league.”
Newcastle have already swooped for one Burnley star this month.
Chris Wood joined the Magpies for a reported £25million.
