Newcastle told to complete ‘world-class Hugo Lloris signing’ by Tottenham expert

Newcastle United should avoid a move for Aaron Ramsdale and instead complete the “world-class signing’ of Hugo Lloris or free agent David De Gea.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former England and Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson claimed a switch from Arsenal to Tyneside would be “crazy” for Ramsdale who should not play second fiddle to Nick Pope once he returns from injury.

As revealed by Football Insider earlier this month, (4 December) the Magpies were readying a move for the former Man United shot-stopper this January following Pope’s long-term absence.

However, sources subsequently told Football Insider (10 December) that moves for the Spaniard and the out-of-favour Ramsdale look increasingly unlikely.

It was also reported that Newcastle could make a swoop for Tottenham’s Lloris, who remains on the club’s books despite not featuring for Spurs at all this season.

Robinson has warned against a move for Ramsdale but was adamant that either Lloris or De Gea would be excellent short-term improvements on both Martin Dubravka and Loris Karius – the Magpies’ backup options.

“Nick Pope is out for a long time and he has a vital influence over that side,” he told Football Insider.

“Dubravka or Karius aren’t up to that level but they would do a job in the short term.

“Dubravka, for me, would start over Karius as he has done, but Eddie Howe has been very clever with what he’s said in the press.

“He’s said they don’t need a new goalkeeper and that the two that they have are good enough for him.

“He has to say that because he has a few more weeks until the start of January before he can go into the market.

“Whether Financial Fair Play allows that is yet to be seen. There are two goalkeepers they’re looking at in Hugo Lloris and David De Gea that they should look at.

“Lloris could cost next to nothing if they made an agreement with Tottenham to walk away from his contract.

“Both of those options are better than what Newcastle have now. They’re both world-class options, even Lloris at this stage of his career.

“The other option is Aaron Ramsdale, which would be a bit crazy and not be the right move for me.

“Ramsdale needs to move permanently. He’s not a number two goalkeeper and he’s been harshly treated and is unfortunate to sit on the bench.

“It’s up to him on what he wants to do and whether he wants to be a part of an Arsenal side that’s competing in the Champions League and the Premier League.”
