Newcastle told to sell Nick Woltemade already and replace him with younger striker
Newcastle United will be targeting a new addition to their forward options in the summer transfer window.
That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes Eddie Howe will refresh his squad in the summer.
Newcastle have not been able to push on from their fifth-placed Premier League finish last season, with multiple summer signings from last summer having not worked out at St James’ Park.
The big money purchases of Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa have yet to pay off, with Anthony Gordon now utilised as a striker due to their poor goalscoring return.
With Howe coming under pressure on Tyneside, Newcastle’s summer transfer window could be important for the 48-year-old to make a strong start to next season and keep his job.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Newcastle will look to give Wissa “another chance” at the club, with his season having been disrupted by injuries.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks there are “big issues” for the club to address at both ends of the pitch.
| Stat | Number | Rank among Premier League clubs |
| Goals per game | 1.4 | 8th |
| Big Chances Missed | 49 | 7th |
| Goals Conceded per game | 1.5 | 14th |
| Clean Sheets | 8 | 10th |
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think Woltemade might be better suited to back to Germany, get that money back, then I think they’ll go again on Wissa.
“Give him another chance, and they’re going to have to bring in somebody younger up front as well and refresh the squad that way.
“Their issue, I think, Newcastle have got some big issues in terms of the back and the front. So they’re going to have a very, very busy transfer window. And I know that Ross Wilson is going to be really busy up there at the moment.”
Newcastle behind Premier League rivals in Kees Smit pursuit
Newcastle have been handed their first transfer blow of the summer as sources have told Football Insider that AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit is more likely to join Liverpool or Arsenal over the Magpies.
That is due to Smit’s desire to join a club in next season’s Champions League, and Newcastle are seven points adrift of the top five in the Premier League table.
The 20-year-old’s performances have earned him a call-up to the Dutch national team, following his fine season in the Eredivise, with his stock potentially rising further if he can secure a place at this summer’s World Cup.
