Newcastle told to U-turn on Dean Henderson after journalist’s ‘surprising’ update – pundit

Kevin Phillips would be “surprised” if Newcastle United added Dean Henderson to their squad before Monday’s transfer deadline.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League striker and current South Shields manager said Henderson’s signing would be “a waste” with Martin Dubravka already at St. James’ Park.

According to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope (30 January), there is “a strong chance” of Henderson joining the Magpies on loan before Monday’s deadline.

Man United

It comes after Football Insider revealed (16 November) that the England international had made it clear to Man United that he wants to leave in the winter window.

Henderson wants to play regular first team football after failing to displace David de Gea at Old Trafford.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Henderson’s possible arrival, Phillips said: “This one surprises me.

“I like Dubravka. I think he’s a very good goalkeeper.

“I’m not sure about that one, I have to say.

“If I was Newcastle, I’d be happy with Dubravka, especially for the time being. Stick with him until the end of the season at least. If they really want to be ambitious then look at a world-class goalkeeper in the summer.

“Right now, given the problems they have in other areas, I would be using the money to strengthen elsewhere.

“It would be a bit of a waste splashing out on a goalkeeper when you already have Dubravka.”
