Newcastle transfer news: ‘Huge’ Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes updates
Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes are both expected to remain at Newcastle United this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourle revealed the club opted to cash in on Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson in exchange for keeping the two star men.
Eddie Howe was keen to keep both Minteh and Anderson at St James’ Park for the long term, but was forced to make a decision by the club’s financial concerns.
The release clause in Guimaraes’ contract expired on 24 June, while Newcastle have priced suitors out of a move for Isak by naming a “huge” price tag.
As revealed by Football Insider on 6 July, the club are now confident of reaching an agreement over a new contract for Isak despite strong interest from Chelsea.
Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes set to stay at Newcastle United
Early in the transfer window, there had been suggestions that Newcastle would have to cash in on one or more of their star man to ease concerns over PSR.
However, the sales of Anderson and Minteh allowed them to balance the books at the last minute, despite increasing fears over a £50million hole, without needing to sell a star.
The club were desperate to hang on to both Isak and Guimaraes this summer given the importance of their roles in Howe’s team.
Isak established himself as the star striker at St James’ by scoring 25 goals in 40 games last season, with 35 goals in 67 games overall since his arrival.
Guimaraes, meanwhile, is a vital part of Newcastle’s midfield, and his combative style has attracted admirers from the very top clubs in Europe, including Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed that Man City have joined Liverpool in the race to sign Anthony Gordon, so the club may still see one key player leave this summer.
In other news, Newcastle could now accept bids for Miguel Almiron.
