Newcastle turn attention to signing Marc Guehi alternative – sources
Newcastle United are working on signing defender alternatives to Marc Guehi as they struggle to reach an agreement with Crystal Palace, sources have told Football Insider.
Guehi, 24, remains the number one target for Newcastle but Palace have knocked back three offers for the player in the last week.
The view from Newcastle is that they are unwilling to wait too long to secure Guehi’s signature as they seek to strengthen their defence.
Eddie Howe wants a proven centre-back signed and in place for this weekend’s Premier League opener against newly promoted Southampton on Saturday.
Sources have told Football Insider that Newcastle are now assessing the market for alternatives to the England international.
Newcastle United not giving up on Marc Guehi
Guehi is now back with his club following the bitter disappointment of losing the Euro 2024 final to Spain earlier in the summer.
The centre-back has been integral for Palace since making the move from Chelsea back in 2021 having made 111 appearances and scoring five goals for the club.

Palace are reluctant to let another of their star players leave following the £50.8 million deal that saw Michael Olise join German giants Bayern Munich.
The club are desperate to add a new central defender to their squad now that main man Sven Botman has been out for 195 days and counting after suffering an ACL tear.
