Medical expert pinpoints 'disastrous' Newcastle 'failure' as Hayden ruled out for 10 weeks

It is likely that Isaac Hayden has suffered a meniscus “failure” that will rule him out for 10 weeks at Newcastle United.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Hayden has not featured since the 4-0 defeat to Man City last month (19 December), after which he underwent surgery to correct a nagging knee problem.

As quoted by the Chronicle’s Lee Ryder last Friday (7 January), Eddie Howe updated to say the tough-tackling midfielder will miss the next 10 weeks.

Star striker Callum Wilson will miss around eight weeks with a calf injury, while seven other Newcastle first-teamers are also sidelined.

Dinnery called the timing of Hayden’s injury “disastrous” in light of the Magpies litany of absences.

“My best guess is that it’s probably a meniscus problem,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“That is an injury which can be managed until the point where you reach your pain threshold.

“With Hayden, a lot of his performances have been coming from the bench when he maybe wasn’t at optimum levels.

“But given the fact that Newcastle have been so heavily hit by injuries and Covid, he has been required to go out and do a job.

“But ultimately you’re going to reach a point where there is a failure and you need to go under the knife.

“The problem itself wouldn’t have caused any major issues. The chances are that he was always going to need surgery to tidy it up.

“They were waiting to see how long they could keep him playing before they made the decision.

“I dare say he would have liked to have made it through the winter break but unfortunately that wasn’t the case.

“It’s disastrous timing because he’s a player Newcastle can ill afford to lose.”

Hayden has registered one goal in 14 Premier League appearances this term.

His Newcastle side are 19th in the league table ahead of tomorrow’s (15 January) clash against Watford.
