Newcastle United fans took to social media to praise the performance of centre back Ciaran Clark after starring for the Republic of Ireland in their 1-0 win over Wales.
Clark and his team mates travelled across the Irish sea for their crucial World Cup qualifying clash against their near neighbours, knowing that a win would secure a play off spot at the expense of their opponents.
The Newcastle man played a crucial role in keeping the home side at bay as James McClean’s first half strike separated the two sides and ensured that the visitors would be given the chance to qualify for next summer’s World Cup finals.
Newcastle fans turned to Twitter to praise their star’s performance on international duty, although some showed concerns about his defensive technique.
Here, Football Insider has rounded up a selection of the supporters’ best tweets:
Ciaran Clark having a stormer here for ROI. Won every single ball, one miskick but recovered to block the shot.

Clark has established himself as a crucial member of the Newcastle first team since joining from Aston Villa in the summer of 2016.
He developed a formidable partnership with club captain Jamaal Lascelles at the heart of the defence as the Magpies looked to secure promotion from the Championship at the first time of asking.
They were successful, and have continued their partnership into the Premier League, with Clark having started every one of the club’s seven league fixtures this season, scoring once in a 3-0 win over West Ham.
In total he has made 43 appearances across all competitions for Rafael Benitez’s side, scoring four goals and chipping in with a further two assists.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, the Magpies are said to still be in the hunt for this reported former target.
