Attacking star named as Newcastle fans' player of the season

Newcastle United supporters have named attacking star Matt Ritchie as their player of the season after seven games.

In a poll conducted by north east newspaper the Chronicle, available on their website, it was revealed that the Scottish winger had received 40 per cent of the vote, having been a crucial figure in the Magpies’ success this season.

He has appeared in all eight of the club’s fixtures across both league and cup this campaign, and has played a major role in their attacking threat with four assists to his name, continuing the fine form he demonstrated in the Championship last season.

In second place came summer signing Mikel Merino, with the central midfielder having taken 29 per cent of the votes.

At St James’ Park on loan from German giants Borussia Dortmund, the 21-year-old has firmly established himself in the starting XI, and has become a firm fans’ favourite thanks to his energetic and dynamic performances.

Like Ritchie, Merino has appeared in all seven of the club’s league games this season, usurping Jonjo Shelvey after the former Liverpool man was made to serve a three match ban for his sending off on the opening day of the season.

Rounding off the top three is club captain Jamaal Lascelles, who has continued to impress at the heart of the Magpies’ defence, taking 26 per cent of the votes.

Despite having started the season on the bench, with summer signing Florian Lejeune taking his place, the 23-year-old has appeared in every league game so far, and is the club’s joint top scorer in the league with two goals.

Newcastle fans will be hoping the trio can perform at their very best when they go head-to-head with Southampton on Sunday.

In other Newcastle United transfer news, the Magpies are said to still be in the hunt for this reported former target.
