Newcastle United injury news: Ten players ruled out – and pundit can’t believe it
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe should give players a break if they are tired – but the numbers of injuries is “baffling”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie claimed that the short, sharp training that the Magpies do is resulting in several injuries.
Club captain Jamaal Lascelles became the latest player to join the injury list after suffering a rupture to his ACL in the recent win against West Ham.
According to Premier Injuries, Howe is without 10 first-team players due to various injury problems, while Sandro Tonali remains out with suspension.
McAvennie also suggested that physios at the club need to start working on the bodies of the players more as opposed to focusing too heavily on stretching.
Newcastle United players need a break amid busy schedule
“They only do short, sharp training, nobody does the stamina work now,” he told Football Insider.
“We used to do four-mile runs and then train. There was nobody fitter than us back then, no matter what they say about fitness coaches now. I would imagine it may have something to do with that, the short, sharp movements.
“Could it be the training? I just don’t get it, I don’t get why people keep getting injured and dropping down.
“I don’t think they’ve got that big a squad. But there isn’t one player at Newcastle who doesn’t want to play every game. The manager has got to give them a rest. Give them a break and then get them back into shape.
“I think that would do them more good than sitting about, they aren’t getting any rest, they are still training every day. If someone needs a break, give them a few days.
“If someone is injured, there is nothing worse than having to go into training every day and not being able to do anything. Give them a few days off, and they will come back rejuvenated and ready to go again.

“I think the physios at the moment focus don’t get into players enough, it’s all about stretching, that doesn’t do any good. It just surprises me that there are a lot of injuries, it’s absolutely baffling.”
