Newcastle may be relegated 'in eight games' as source reveals twist in striker hunt amid Wood update - pundit
Newcastle United will get relegated if they do not sign a replacement for Callum Wilson, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed Newcastle could be effectively relegated by the time Wilson is ready to return.
Eddie Howe revealed, via BBC Sport, on Sunday (9 January) that he will be without his star striker for eight weeks with a calf injury.
A club source told Football Insider they want to sign another striker this month as they put the final touches to a deal for Burnley’s Chris Wood.
Newcastle have triggered a £25million release clause in Wood’s contract with the Clarets.
“It’s not good at all for Newcastle after losing to Cambridge,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“They’ve got to be very careful. They’ve got Kieran Trippier in which I think is a very good signing but they need to go out and buy a striker. At least one.
“Callum Wilson is out for eight Premier League games, you could be down in eight Premier League games. That’s nearly half of what is left to play.
“They need to go out and buy a goalscorer. Dwight Gayle is not going to get you the goals.
“They lack goals in that squad without Callum Wilson. Their next signing should be a striker and they should go all out for one.”
Wilson is Newcastle’s top goalscorer in the Premier League this season with six.
Allan Saint-Maximin is the only other player to score more than once for the club this term.
