Newcastle United must line up Jacob Murphy sale, he proved 2024-25 was a one-off yet again in loss vs Crystal Palace

Newcastle United will surely be ready to offload Jacob Murphy this summer after another dismal display in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace.

The winger is set to enter the final year of his contract at St James’ Park in the summer, and he has continually failed to make a compelling case for that deal to be extended so far this term.

The 31-year-old has managed just four goal involvements in the Premier League in 2025-26, and has been largely ineffective for the Magpies in the wide areas.

Murphy has shared attacking duties with Anthony Elanga on the right flank, but the impact of both stars has left a lot to be desired amid the team’s ongoing struggles.

Newcastle are eyeing a far better summer than they endured last time around, and they must surely have an exit for Murphy in mind as part of their business after the latest round of evidence.

Jacob Murphy miles off 2024-25 levels after Crystal Palace disaster

Murphy enjoyed the season of his life at Newcastle last term, as he starred for the Magpies from the beginning of the campaign.

The wideman ended the season with a stunning 20 league goal contributions to his name, while his tally of 12 assists was bettered only by Mohamed Salah.

However, he has looked a shadow of the player who previously tore up top-flight defences in that campaign, and he proved that yet again in the defeat to Crystal Palace.

The veteran was named captain for the day at Selhurst Park, but he endured a disastrous afternoon, as he failed to register a single shot or complete a successful dribble.

Murphy created just one chance throughout the game, and lost a concerning 70 per cent of his duels, according to Fotmob.

It was yet more evidence that his performance levels have slipped drastically since his eye-catching exploits of 2024-25, which has looked increasingly like a one-off season with every passing game.

With that in mind, it is surely best for Newcastle to take whatever money they can get for him this summer, given that it is their final chance to cash in before he likely departs as a free agent in 2027.

Mika Godts ready to finish Murphy at Newcastle

Newcastle have been linked with Mika Godts consistently of late, as the Ajax winger continues to make a name for himself in the Eredivisie.

The 20-year-old has notched a staggering 15 goals and 10 assists from just 28 league games so far this term, and the Magpies have now got their hearts set on bringing him to the Premier League.

It would not be a cheap deal by any means for Howe and Co. to get hold of the Belgian for next season, but if they could, then that would surely finish Murphy for good.

The disappointing returns from many of Newcastle’s attacking additions last summer are sure to have further reinforcements in the offing this time around, and players like Murphy are likely to pay the price as a result.
