Newcastle United news: Expert verdict on Sven Botman handing in transfer request after £30m update

Alan Hutton has claimed Newcastle will want Sven Botman to hand in a transfer request to force a move away from Lille if they continue to stand firm on his valuation.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 22-year-old will be wary of burning his bridges at the French club by doing so.

The Telegraph reported on 13 June that Newcastle were willing to walk away from a deal for Botman after Lille upped their asking price from £30million to £36million.

A Magpies source told Football Insider on Thursday (16 June) that they have not given up hope of landing Botman – but he would prefer a move to transfer rivals AC Milan.

Both sides are understood to have agreed personal terms with the Netherlands Under-21 international but there has been no breakthrough regarding a fee for his services.

Hutton suggested Botman will be wary of handing in a transfer request as the deal could collapse.

“Every club wants the player they’re targeting to push for a move,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“Newcastle will want him to go to Lille and hand in a transfer request because it makes a deal easier and quicker. It helps the negotiations run easier for the buying club.

“But it’s not ideal for the player. If, for whatever reason, the move doesn’t go through – then the fans will be unhappy that you’ve handed in a transfer request.

“You don’t see many players doing that.”

Newcastle have converted Matt Targett’s loan from Aston Villa into a permanent deal – their only transfer move of the summer so far.

The Magpies will start their 2022-23 campaign at home against Nottingham Forest on 6 August.
