Newcastle United news: Pundit ‘delighted’ by huge Joelinton development – ‘Fans will love this’

Joelinton “deserves” a new deal at Newcastle United as he is “important” to the side.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie admitted he was “delighted” that Joelinton, 27, is set to pen new terms at St James’ Park.

The Brazilian is reportedly close to finalising a four-year extension to his Magpies contract following uncertainty around his future at Eddie Howe’s side.

The midfielder has just 15 months left on his current deal and Newcastle were set to listen to offers if they could not tie him down to fresh terms.

Joelinton ‘deserves’ new Newcastle United deal – McAvennie

After a highly criticised and largely mocked first few years at the club after his reported £40million move from Hoffenheim in 2019, he has been revolutionised by Howe and converted into a combative and effective midfielder.

He has featured in every game he has been available for in all competitions this season, but a hamstring and groin injury has limited his game time to just 22 appearances.

McAvennie hailed Joelinton’s influence on the side and suggested that he would be very happy to stay at the club.

“It’s great for Joelinton because he’s had a couple of injuries,” he told Football Insider.

“It’s great for the fans too because they love him and they will love this.

“I’m delighted for the boy.

“He deserves it too for how important he’s been for the club.

“He looks like he really enjoys it at Newcastle.

“Every time he plays, he plays with a smile on his face so fair play to him and good luck.”
