Newcastle United player ratings vs Tottenham: Fabian Schar is sensational, 4/10 loses all his duels

Newcastle United secured an emphatic 4-0 victory over Tottenham at St James’ Park on Saturday (13 April).

Alexander Isak netted twice for the hosts either side of Anthony Gordon’s strike in the first half before Fabian Schar rounded off the performance with a late header.

Newcastle have now climbed above Manchester United into sixth in the Premier League table while Tottenham have dropped below Aston Villa into fifth.

PLAYER RATINGS

Martin Dubravka [5]

Survived a scare in the second half when he fumbled an easy catch. Organised his back-line well but was too lackluster in his distribution with a pass completion rate of just 33 percent.

Emil Krafth [6]

A solid performance from the Swede – who kept Heung-Min Son quiet throughout. Rarely caught out of position and was only dribbled past once. He covered well for Murphy against the overlapping Destiny Udogie.

Fabian Schar [9]

The standout performer in Newcastle’s backline and unlucky that the limelight was stolen by Newcastle’s deadly forwards. Howe opted for a back three in possession and Schar was the central anchor who swept up at the back with four interceptions and two tackles.

Dan Burn [4]

Newcastle

A miserable performance. Burn won zero of his three ground duels and lost possession 12 times. He was a liability when Tottenham attacked with pace and he was extremely lucky to not concede a penalty in the first half after a moment of recklessness.

Jacob Murphy [6]

Tasked with playing an unorthodox right-back role out of possession and handled it superbly. He covered almost every blade of grass and won three of his six ground duels before being withdrawn late on.

Sean Longstaff [5]

The weak link in midfield. Went about his work quietly in midfield and was impressive defensively but struggled in possession. Longstaff’s passing was wayward and he ended the match having lost possession six times.

Bruno Guimaraes [6]

Newcastle

Uncharacteristically quiet until he provided a superb pass for the third goal. The Brazilian was combative in midfield with four tackles completed. Newcastle were happy to surrender possession for large parts of the game meaning Guimaraes spent most of his afternoon protecting the back four.

Elliot Anderson [6]

A brilliant performance from Newcastle’s young gem. The 21-year-old was given the freedom to roam forward and he often provided the link to the front three. Anderson also performed his defensive duties well with six ground duels won in the heart of midfield.

Harvey Barnes [7]

An underrated cog in Newcastle’s well-oiled attacking machine. Barnes missed large parts of the season with a hamstring injury but he has slotted superbly into Newcastle’s front three and deserves to keep his spot after transforming the team. Outshone by Isak and Gordon but still deserving of huge praise.

Alexander Isak [10]

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak

Micky van de Ven will have nightmares about Isak tonight. Newcastle’s talisman tormented the Spurs backline throughout the match and deserved to leave with the match ball.

Isak looks unstoppable in front of goal with seven goals in his last six matches and Newcastle must do everything in their control to keep hold of him this summer.

Anthony Gordon [9]

Electric from minute one. Gordon continued to find space both out wide and centrally and turned to run at a shaky Spurs backline at every given opportunity. He made eight key passes and has formed a deadly partnership with Isak up front.

SUBSTITUTES

Tino Livramento [6] – A solid showing in the final few minutes. Looked dangerous attacking down the right.

Lewis Hall [5] – A late replacement for Harvey Barnes. Looked lively but failed to get on the ball.
